A genus of lobe-finned fish that lived in the Devonian Period of the Paleozoic Eusthenopteron. Along with coelacanths and lungfish, it has been considered one of the fishes that are closest to amphibians. It has two dorsal fins and a three-lobed tail. The internal skeleton that supports the pectoral and pelvic fins has a basic structure similar to that of primitive amphibians. It has been thought to have internal nostrils that connect to the oral cavity, but some scholars have recently doubted the existence of internal nostrils. It is considered to be the most primitive of the amphibians, and its internal structure is very similar to that of Ichthyostega, which lived in the Devonian Period of Greenland, so it is considered to be one of the closest organisms to the stage when vertebrates transitioned from an aquatic life to a terrestrial life.
