Inukug - Inukug

A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It grows 30-80 cm tall, with a spherical swelling at the base of the stem, reddish purple, and leaves 3-6 mm wide. It flowers from summer to autumn, with several to a dozen flower spikes at the top of the stem. It grows in sunny grasslands near the coast and becomes a weed in fields and orchards. It is found in the southern Kanto region, Kii Peninsula, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa, and is widely distributed in tropical regions around the world. It is also called Kugu, but the origin is unknown. There is a theory that it is distinguished from the Cyperus genus and belongs to the Inukugu genus because the spikelets fall from the base.

カヤツリグサ科（APG分類：カヤツリグサ科）の多年草。高さは30～80センチメートル、茎の基部は球状に膨れ、赤紫色を帯び、葉は幅3～6ミリメートル。花期は夏から秋で、茎頂に数個から十数個の花穂をつける。海岸近くの日当りのよい草地に生え、畑や果樹園の雑草となる。関東地方南部、紀伊半島、四国、九州、沖縄にみられ、世界の熱帯に広く分布する。クグともよばれるが語源は不明。小穂が基部から落ちるため、カヤツリグサ属と区別し、イヌクグ属を認める説もある。
