The translation of the term "liberal education" is one that emphasizes human culture itself, rather than education for the acquisition of a profession or specialized skills. It originated from the idea of education in ancient Greece to acquire culture appropriate for free people. However, in Japan, it often refers to education that is practiced based on the needs of children and the creativity of educators, as opposed to traditional, uniform public education, and liberal education in this sense was particularly popular during the Taisho democracy period.
