After obtaining 15 clinical cases, Wells tried a public experiment at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston the following January, but it failed. In October 1846, after W. Morton succeeded in anesthesia experiments using ether at the same hospital, Wells, while investigating the properties of various anesthetics, eventually became addicted to it, became a psychopath, and died in a New York prison.
