Tadayo Sakai - It's Sakai

Japanese: 酒井忠世 - さかいただよ
Tadayo Sakai - It's Sakai

A fudai daimyo in the early Edo period. Lord of Maebashi Castle in Kozuke (Gunma Prefecture). Elderly councilor. Born in Nishio as the eldest son of Shigetada, lord of Nishio Castle in Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture), the direct descendant of Utanosuke Sakai, a senior retainer of the Tokugawa clan. In 1590 (Tensho 18), he became a chief retainer of Tokugawa Hidetada, and when Hidetada became the second shogun, he became a central advisor along with Doi Toshikatsu, Okubo Tadachika, and Honda Masanobu. In 1617 (Genwa 3), he inherited the heirloom, and together with his previous fiefdom, he was given 85,000 koku and made Maebashi his castle (later receiving an increase to over 120,000 koku). In 1890, he became a retainer of Iemitsu, and when Iemitsu became shogun in the same year, he again served as his advisor. In 1891, after the death of Hidetada, he was ordered to guard the Nishinomaru of Edo Castle, and lived there. In 1891, while Iemitsu was visiting Kyoto, a fire burned down the Nishinomaru, and he was criticized for his subsequent actions and temporarily suspended from service, but was soon pardoned.
