One of the dance rhythms. It originated from the acrobatic, pantomime-like Kikonga ritual dance "Son" among the African-descended Cubans, and spread to America and Europe in the 1930s as a popular social dance. Around the same time, rumba was influenced by jazz and became the basis of mambo. The musical characteristic of rumba is the complex, syncopated two-beat ostinato played by claves and maracas, which, together with the dance movements, can create polyrhythms. The melody is also roughly repetitive. Dancers stand upright and sway their hips to the quick-quick-slow rhythm.
