Located in northwestern Germany, between the Ruhr and Lippe rivers, both tributaries of the Rhine, this is one of Europe's leading industrial regions. Centered on the Ruhr coalfields, the region has developed into a center of steel, machinery, metal and chemical industries since the late 19th century, and is home to industrial cities such as Essen and Dortmund. From 1923 to 1925, the region was occupied by France (Ruhr issue), and suffered great damage during World War II. → Related topics Coalfields Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
