Jacques Lemercier

French architect. He was the predecessor of Louis Le Baud as chief royal architect, and was also a leading figure in French classicism under the reign of Louis XIV. Both his work and his reputation are closely linked to Cardinal Richelieu. At Richelieu's request, he built the Palais Cardinal in Paris (construction began in 1633, now the Palais Royal), and also planned the small town of Richelieu (Indre-et-Loire, 1631) to commemorate the cardinal. Another work commissioned by Richelieu, the Sorbonne Chapel (1635-42), is noted as one of his masterpieces, skillfully applying the Italian Baroque style.

フランスの建築家。王室首席建築家としてはルイ・ルボーの前任者であり、同時にルイ14世統治下のフランス古典主義の主導者であった。彼の作品と名声は、ともに枢機卿(すうききょう)リシュリューと深いかかわりをもっている。リシュリューの要請でパリにパレ・カルディナル（1633着工、現在のパレ・ロワイヤル）を建立し、また枢機卿を記念する小都市リシュリュー（アンドル・エ・ロワール県、1631）を計画した。リシュリューの委嘱によるもう一つの作品、ソルボンヌ大学付属礼拝堂（1635～42）は、イタリア・バロック様式を巧みに適用した彼の代表作として注目される。
