…(1) A king of Cyprus. He fell in love with an ivory maiden he had made with his own hands, and prayed to the goddess Aphrodite to grant him a wife similar to the statue. The goddess then brought the statue to life, and he married her and had a son, Paphos. This story, best known from Ovid's Metamorphoses, was most recently adapted into GB Shaw's comedy Pygmalion (1913), which was then used as the basis for the musical My Fair Lady. …
