Rumelia (English spelling)

Japanese: ルーメリア（英語表記）Rumelia

The general name given to the European territories of the Ottoman Empire. Also the name of the province of which Sofia was its capital. Since the Byzantines called themselves Rhōmaioi and their country Rhōmania, Muslims called the Byzantine territories Bilad al-'rom (the land of Rome, or the Greek world from the Arab point of view), which mainly referred to Anatolia. After the Turks conquered Anatolia, Europeans began to call it "Turkmenia," or "the land of the Turks," around the 13th century, and Romania came to refer to the European territories that remained in the Byzantine Empire.

オスマン帝国のヨーロッパ領に対して与えられた一般的呼称。また，ソフィアを都とした州の名。ビザンティン帝国の人々が，自分たちをロマイオイRhōmaioi，国土をロマニアRhōmaniaと呼んでいたことから，ムスリムはビザンティン領をビラード･アッルーム(ローマの地，すなわちアラブからみればギリシア語の世界)と呼び，それは主としてアナトリアを指していた。トルコ族がアナトリアを征服した後，13世紀ごろからヨーロッパ人がアナトリアを〈トゥルクメニア〉，すなわち〈トルコ人の国〉と呼び始めると，ロマニアはビザンティン帝国に残されたヨーロッパ領を指す言葉となった。
