Anglo-Dutch War

Anglo-Dutch War
Three wars between England and the Netherlands in the second half of the 17th century, competing for control of the seas. [First war] 1652-54 After the Puritan Revolution, Cromwell issued the Navigation Acts (1651) and aimed to expel Dutch commerce. As a result, England won the war and signed the Treaty of Westminster, which led to the economic decline of the Netherlands.
[Second War] 1665-67 After the Restoration, England allied with the Dutch Stadthouse (House of Orange) to oppress Amsterdam merchants and their overseas colonies. In 1664, they occupied New Amsterdam in North America and renamed it New York. War broke out the following year in 1665, and ended with the Treaty of Burda, with the Dutch in the lead. England renounced its rights to the East Indies, but acquired New York.
[Third War] 1672-74 The war began when King Louis XIV of France and King Charles II of England made the Secret Treaty of Dover (1670) and planned to invade the Netherlands. The Netherlands was in a difficult position after French attacks, but opposition grew within England, and the Netherlands made peace again by confirming the Treaty of Westminster. As a result, Dutch naval superiority was completely transferred to England.
