… It was not until the 20th century that the gas turbine became feasible, due to the advancement of turbine manufacturing technology along with the practical application and development of steam turbines. First, in the early 1900s, R. Armingeau and others in France succeeded in operating a gas turbine for the first time by combining a gas turbine combustor, a multi-stage centrifugal compressor, and a water-cooled two-stage impulse turbine. It operated at about 4000 rpm, had an external output of 300 horsepower, and a thermal efficiency of about 3%, but many people were disappointed by the need for a large air compressor. …
