A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. Founder of the Kato clan of Omi Minakuchi Domain (Minakuchi Town, Shiga Prefecture). His first name was Shigekatsu, and he was commonly known as Magoroku and Samanosuke. At the age of 13, he served under Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi, and then became directly subordinate to Hideyoshi. In the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583, he was awarded 3,000 koku for his distinguished service as one of the Seven Spears, and the following year he became the lord of Shichi Castle in Awaji with a stipend of 15,000 koku. After that, he participated in the Kyushu Expedition, the Siege of Odawara, and the Bunroku-Keicho War as a ship's commander. During this time, in 1595, he was transferred to Iyo Matsumae with a stipend of 60,000 koku. In the Battle of Sekigahara, he belonged to the Eastern Army, and after the battle, his stipend was increased to 200,000 koku in Iyo Matsumae. Under the Tokugawa government, he shared in the repairs of Edo Castle, Sunpu Castle, Sasayama Castle, Nagoya Castle, and other castles. During the Winter Siege of Osaka in 1614, he was sent to Edo Castle as caretaker, but took part in the Summer Siege the following year. In 1622, he served as an attendant when Tokugawa Iemitsu first put on armor, and the following year he was promoted to Junior Fourth Rank. In 1626, he accompanied Tokugawa Hidetada and Iemitsu to Kyoto, and was appointed chamberlain on that occasion. The following year he was granted a fief of 400,000 koku as lord of Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle, but died of an illness in Edo in the same year. In 1917, he was promoted to Junior Third Rank.

安土桃山・江戸時代前期の武将。近江水口藩(滋賀県水口町)加藤家の祖。初名茂勝,通称は孫六,左馬助。13歳で羽柴(豊臣)秀吉に仕え羽柴(豊臣)秀勝付き,次いで秀吉直属となる。天正11(1583)年の賤ケ岳の戦で七本槍のひとりとして功あり3000石を与えられ,翌年には淡路1万5000石志智城主となる。以後は船手の将として九州征討,小田原攻め,文禄・慶長の役に参加。この間の文禄4(1595)年,伊予松前6万石に転封。関ケ原の戦では東軍に属し,戦後伊予松前20万石となる。徳川政権下では江戸城,駿府城,篠山城,名古屋城などの修築を分担。慶長19(1614)年の大坂冬の陣では江戸城留守居となったが,翌年の夏の陣には自ら参陣。元和8(1622)年,徳川家光鎧着初の介添役を務め,翌年従四位下。寛永3(1626)年,徳川秀忠・家光の上洛に供奉,その際侍従に任ぜられた。翌年会津若松城主40万石に封ぜられたが,同8年江戸で病死。大正6(1917)年に至り贈従三位。
