Fumoto Village - Fumotoshuraku

Japanese: 麓集落 - ふもとしゅうらく

A settlement of local samurai living in the area of the Satsuma Domain in the early modern period, with military and administrative functions. It is also written as Fuge or Fuhon. In addition to the samurai living in the castle town of Kagoshima Castle, the domain established around 100 to 110 outer castles in various locations within the domain, and stationed local samurai called shujuyu in charge of defending the domain's territory, establishing them as the ruling class. The Fumoto settlements were the centers of local administration within the domain, and the larger ones, such as Miyakonojo, Kokubu, Kajiki, and Izumi, were comparable in size to castle towns in smaller domains.

近世薩摩藩領域内に分布する在郷武士団の居住集落で，軍事的･行政的機能を有する。府下あるいは府本とも書く。藩内では鹿児島城下に居住する城下士のほかに，領域内の100余から110前後の各地に外城（とじよう）を置き，外城衆中（しゆうじゆう）と呼ぶ郷士を配置して藩領の防衛を担当させ，支配層として定着させた。麓集落は藩領内の地方行政の中心であったので，例えば都城（みやこのじよう），国分，加治木，出水（いずみ）などの大きなものは小藩の城下町にも相当する程度の規模を有した。
