In 1791, John Barber of England invented and patented a gas turbine in which two reciprocating pumps compressed fuel gas and air, respectively, and fed them into a combustor. The fuel gas was burned continuously, and the combustion gas turned a turbine, driving the compression pump through a reduction gear while simultaneously extracting power from the upper gear.
