A novel by the African-American American author Alex Haley (1921-1992). Published in 1976. It depicts the history of an African-American family. It traces their lineage back to their ancestors' homeland, Gambia, Africa, and carefully describes the hardships they faced in the white American society after being brought there as slaves. It became a bestseller and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1977. It was later made into a television movie, which was a huge success and raised awareness and interest in their own "roots" (ethnic origins) among people of African descent.
