Copying place - Shakyosho

Japanese:
Copying place - Shakyosho
An institution that mainly copied Buddhist scriptures. In addition to being run by the government, it was also established by the imperial family, aristocrats, and large temples. Under the ritsuryo system, Buddhist scriptures and non-Buddhist texts (apocrypha) were copied at the Zusho-ryo (Library). The existence of a sutra copying center has been confirmed since 727, and when Empress Kōmyo's Office of the Empress's Court (Kōgoguushiki) was established in 729, it managed a sutra copying center, and when the Office of Todaiji Construction was established around 748, it was incorporated into this (Todaiji Sutra Copying Center). In the early days, noshi (stylists) from various government agencies were seconded, but later they were recruited from the private sector. In 762, Emperor Shōtoku's Office of Copying Sutras (Hōsha Mishikyō) was placed in the Imperial Palace and promoted to Office of Copying All Sutras, but after the death of the emperor in 770, it reverted to Office of Copying All Sutras at Todaiji (Hōsha Mishikyō). Approximately 10,000 documents, including ledgers, from the Todaiji Sutra Copying Center have been preserved in the Shosoin Repository (Shosoin documents).
