...With director Engel, set designer Neher, and actors such as Busch, Bild, Geschonegg, Weigel, and Giese, the company soon attracted international attention for its repertoire of Brecht's works and classic and modern classic interpretations in the Brechtian style. During this time, young directors such as Besson, Monk, Palitzsch, and Manfred Wekwerth (1929-) and actors such as Hurwitz, Reichel, Frellchinger, Kaiser, Thate, and Schall were born. In 1954, the company was given the former Schiffbauer Damm Theater, and by the time of Brecht's death in 1956, it had performed plays such as The Mother, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, The Governing Body, and The Broken Jug. Criticism from the official line weakened due to the company's worldwide fame after winning the Paris International Theater Festival, and a new theatrical practice aimed at recognizing Brecht's reforms began to bloom.
