The script used to write Sanskrit in India. It is based on the Nagari script, which was derived from the Brahmi script. It developed in India around the 7th century. After the 10th century, it was fully formed and became the general term for the script that is in widespread use today. It is used for publishing Sanskrit documents, as well as for modern Indo-Aryan languages such as Hindi and Nepali. There are independent vowel characters used at the beginning of a word, and half-symbols that represent syllables of a consonant + vowel and are attached to a consonant, but consonants used independently always contain the sound a. Therefore, it can be called a syllabary composed of alphabetic elements.

インドでサンスクリット語を書くのに用いられる文字。ブラーフミー文字に由来するナーガリー文字を母体とする。7世紀頃にインドで発達。 10世紀以後は形態も整い，現今一般に普及した文字の総称となった。サンスクリット文献の出版に使用されるほか，ヒンディー語，ネパール語などをはじめとする近代インド＝アーリア語に用いられている。母音字には語頭で用いられる独立文字と，子音＋母音の音節を表わす文字で子音字に付属させる半体符号とがあるが，独立に用いられた子音字は常にa音を含んでいる。したがって，アルファベット的要素から成る音節文字ということができる。
