Sardou - Victorien Sardou

French playwright. At first he was influenced by Musset, but was unpopular, and then he succeeded with "The Nail Course" (1860), which imitated Scribe's "well-crafted script". After that, he wrote social dramas such as "Les Enfants" (1880), melodramas such as "Phaedra" (1882) and "Tosca" (1887), which became hits for the great actress Sarah Bernhardt, and in his later years he focused on historical dramas such as "Madame de Saint-Jean" (1893), and wrote a lot in all genres of theater. Although his works were lacking in content, he achieved his goal of making the stage interesting, and played a role in bridging the gap between the collapse of romantic theater and the establishment of realism.

フランスの劇作家。初めミュッセの影響を受けたが不評で、スクリーブ流の「よく作られた脚本」に倣い『金釘(かなくぎ)流』（1860）で成功した。以後『別れよう』（1880）のような社会劇、ついで『フェドラ』（1882）、『トスカ』（1887）などのメロドラマは大女優サラ・ベルナールの当り芝居となり、晩年は『サン・ジェーヌ夫人』（1893）などの史劇に集中し、演劇のあらゆるジャンルにわたって書きまくった。内容には乏しいながら舞台をおもしろくする目的は達し、ロマン主義演劇が崩壊して、写実主義演劇が樹立されるまでをつなぐ役目を果たした。
