...Realist fiction reached a high level through the works of Nicolae Filimon (1819-65), Duiliu Zamfirescu (1858-1922), Ioan Slavici (1848-1925), and Alexandru Odobescu (1834-95). Under the influence of French Symbolism, Alexandru Macedonski (1854-1920) tried to innovate the poetic form, and in Transylvania, where the nationalist movement was intensifying, George Coşbuc (1866-1918) produced a work that sang of the suffering and longings of the people, and this tradition was continued by the next generation, Goga. Serious research into folk songs, folk tales and language began with Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu (1838-1907), and Kuryanga's original folk tales became a popular reading material.
