They are pastoralists living in the Minusinsk Basin in southern Siberia, Russia. They speak a Turkic language. Formerly known as Minusin Tatar, Abakan Tatar, or Yenisei Tatar. Population: 78,500 (1989). They are thought to be descendants of the Shangjis in the Book of Tang, the Kirkis in the Turkic inscriptions, the Qilijisi in the Yuan dynasty, and the 17th century Yenisei Kyrgyz, but in the early 18th century the ruling class of the Yenisei Kyrgyz fled to Central Asia via Dzungaria and became the core of the Kyrgyz people.
