A general term for buds that, for some reason, grow on the leaf surface, parts of the roots, or other organs or tissues that do not normally produce buds. They grow at the tips of leaves in spider ferns, blue ferns, and Japanese laurel fern, on the leaf surfaces in common ferns, and on the edges of leaves in Kalanchoe pinnata, which then fall to the ground and become seedlings. Begonia leaf cuttings are good examples. In black locust and jujube, they grow in various places on the horizontal roots. As opposed to fixed buds that grow from a fixed location, such as terminal buds that grow from the tip of a stem, and axillary buds or accessory buds that grow from the leaf axils.
