Forest tree breeding

Japanese: 林木育種 - りんぼくいくしゅ

Breeding of forest trees. In the narrow sense, it means creating genetically superior materials than previous materials, but today it means genetically managing forest tree populations, i.e. forests. When cultivating forests through natural regeneration, the parent trees must be those that are already there, and when cultivating forests by planting, the genetic composition of the planted materials is affected by thinning and other maintenance, so creating superior materials is only a part of forest tree breeding.

林木を対象とする育種。狭い意味では，これまでの材料よりも遺伝的に優れたものをつくりだすことであるが，今日では，林木の集団つまり森林を遺伝的に管理することを意味している。天然更新によって林を仕立てる場合には，もともとそこにあるものを親木（おやぎ）として使わなければならないし，植栽して林を仕立てる場合にも，植えこんだ材料の遺伝的組成は間伐などの手入れによって影響をうけるから，優れた材料をつくりだすことは林木育種の一部にすぎない。
