American aviator. Born in Detroit. His father was a Swedish immigrant and a member of the House of Representatives. He dropped out of the University of Wisconsin's Department of Mechanical Engineering and graduated from the Army Flying School in 1925. After working as a postal pilot and other positions, he made a nonstop transatlantic flight in the single-engine Spirit of St. Louis (from Roosevelt Field in the suburbs of New York to Le Bourget Field near Paris) in May 1927, becoming an international hero. In May 1929, he married Anne Morrow (1906-2001), the daughter of the Mexican ambassador, whom he met during a goodwill flight to Central and South America. Anne eventually became her husband's co-pilot, and the couple often flew to various places. In 1932, he suffered the tragedy of his eldest son, who was just under two years old, being kidnapped and murdered (this incident led to the passage of the so-called Lindbergh Act, which made kidnappings across multiple states a federal crime). He lived in Europe from 1935 to 1939. During this time in France, he worked with Dr. A. Carrel to develop the first heart-lung machine. In Germany, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by Nazi leader Goering. After returning to Japan, he became a central figure in the opposition to America's entry into World War II, but after the war he became an advisor to the Ministry of the War and was deployed to the Pacific front, where he participated in aerial battles. In 1954, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his memoirs of his solo flight. His wife, Ann, is also a writer.
