Aguni Island

Aguni Island, Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture, is an island consisting of one village. It is located 60 km northwest of Naha City. Its area is 7.64 square kilometers. It is a low, flat plateau with a highest point of 96 meters. Tertiary volcanic rocks are exposed in the southwest, forming bedrock, but the rest of the island is covered with Quaternary Ryukyu limestone, forming a coastal terrace. The island is surrounded by fringing coral reefs, so there are few inlets. Population: 844 (2009).

沖縄県島尻(しまじり)郡粟国村の島で、1村をなす。那覇市の北西60キロメートルの洋上にある。面積7.64平方キロメートル。低平な台地状で、最高点96メートル。南西部に第三紀火山岩類が一部露出し、基盤岩をなすほかは、第四紀琉球(りゅうきゅう)石灰岩でほぼ全島が覆われ、海岸段丘の地形をなす。周囲はすべて裾礁(きょしょう)のサンゴ礁海岸のため、湾入に乏しい。人口844（2009）。
