...In 1872, at the request of Leland Stanford (former governor of California), he created a special photosensitive plate and exposure device to settle a debate about animal movement, as to whether a horse's four legs leave the ground when it runs. He succeeded in taking high-speed instantaneous photographs, proving that all four legs leave the ground. In 1880, he developed the zoopraxiscope (meaning a device for observing animal movements), and succeeded in continuously filming all kinds of movements of humans and animals. This was extremely important as it was not just an analysis of movements, but a reproduction of the movements themselves, and thus marked the beginning of the development of film.
