Records of Linji

Japanese:
Records of Linji

A Chinese Buddhist book. It is a collection of sayings by Rinzai Gigen, the founder of the Rinzai sect, and is more specifically called "Zenshi Esho of Rinzai in Chinzhou." It is in one volume. It was edited by his disciple Sansho Enen and verified by Kouke Zonsho. At the beginning of the volume, there is a preface by Ma Fang, who was the governor of Chinzhou at the end of the Northern Song dynasty, and it is made up of four parts: Shangdo, Shishu, Kanben, and Anroku. At the end of the Anroku, there is a biography, and both the form and the content are considered typical of Zen collections of sayings. It contains many famous phrases, such as "Whenever you make a statement with the Lord, every place you stand is true," "The twelve-part teaching of the three vehicles is a used paper that wipes away impurities," and "By killing the Buddha and the Patriarch, you can finally attain liberation." It also contains colloquial language from the Tang dynasty, such as "wu duo zi" (simple), "kappappachi" (lively), and "ke ke di" (to a certain extent), making it a noteworthy source of such language. In addition to the 1120 edition, there is the text of the Four Family Records that preceded it, and it has been translated into both English and French.
