A collection of short stories by Irish novelist J. Joyce. Published in 1914. With the intention of writing a chapter in the history of the Irish spirit, Joyce focuses on Dublin, which is thought to be the center of "paralysis," and consists of 15 stories that present the paralysis, or lethargy, and "the special smell of decay" of Dublin and its citizens in four aspects: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and social life. All of the stories depict vulgar, frustrated people, but only the last story, "Dead Men," shows a glimmer of forgiveness for the world and humanity, suggesting a connection to his later masterpiece, Ulysses.
