...It has been said since ancient times that it is considered a bad omen when it crosses one's path, and people try to avoid this bad omen by chanting "Itachimimeyoshi (The weasel's face is beautiful)." In Hinoeda, Fukushima Prefecture, people call it to possess people and listen to its oracles, which is an example of the recognition of spirituality in the weasel. Its other names, such as Toma in northern Hyogo Prefecture, Zutto in Kitaazumi District, Nagano Prefecture, and Osako in eastern Ehime Prefecture, are apparently remnants of the use of taboo words for the name, out of fear of being cursed.
