A deciduous shrub of the Saxifragaceae family (illustration), widely planted in gardens for decorative purposes. It is a symbolic flower of the rainy season. In kanji, it is often written as "hydrangea" as a common kanji. The trunk grows in clusters, reaching a height of about 1.5m, and is well branched. The leaves are opposite, without stipules, stalked, large, thick, glossy on the upper surface, and almost hairless. They are obovate in shape, with sharply pointed tips and sawtooth edges. In June and July, many spherical flowers bloom at the ends of the branches. Most of the flowers are decorative, with large sepals that have become petal-like, and are generally a beautiful blue-purple color, but there are also varieties that are white and pale pink.
