Rotational farming method - Rinsai Shikinouho

Japanese: 輪栽式農法 - りんさいしきのうほう

A method of agricultural management centered on crop rotation. It developed in the early 18th century in the Norfolk region of England as a four-field rotation, and spread to other areas. There are single-field rotations, which combine fields into one, and compound-field rotations, which combine fields into multiple. Compared to the earlier improved three-field farming method, the area planted with grasses is reduced, but the planting of root vegetables and legumes is increased, leading to an increase in the number of livestock kept. This also increases the productivity of manure, which helps improve soil fertility and increases crop production.

輪作を中心とした農業経営方式。18世紀前半に英国ノーフォーク地方で四圃(ほ)輪栽として発達し，各地に普及した。圃場を一つにした単圃輪栽と複数にした複圃輪栽とがある。それ以前の改良三圃式農法に比べ，イネ科作物の作付面積は減るが，根菜類やマメ科牧草などの作付が増加するため，家畜飼養頭数がふえる。またそれに伴い厩肥(きゅうひ)の生産力が増して地力の増進に役立ち，作物生産も増大する。
