Asaoka Okisada

A painter from the late Edo period. A researcher into the biographies of painters. His first name was Nobuyoshi, and his pen name was Heishu. He was the second son of Ikawain Eishin, the 8th head of the Kobikicho Kano family. In 1820, he was adopted by Asaoka Okokuni, and in 1833, he succeeded to the family headship. He was favored by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyoshi, and in 1833, he became the small storehouse attendant and then the art officer. In 1853, he retired from his duties, shaved his head, and took the name Sanraku. His book, Koga Bikou, contains many records of signatures and seals of the old paintings he belonged to, as well as valuable old documents, and remains important even today as a study of the biographies of painters from before the Meiji period. 江戸後期の画家。画家伝などに関する考証家。初名信義,号平洲。木挽町狩野家8代目伊川院栄信の次男。文政3(1820)年朝岡興邦の養子となり,天保4(1833)年家督を継ぐ。将軍徳川家慶の寵遇を受け,天保2年御小納戸,次いで御絵番掛となる。嘉永6(1853)年役を辞し,剃髪して三楽と号した。著書『古画備考』は,属目した古画類の落款や印章などの記録や貴重な古文書を多数載せ,明治以前の画家伝研究として今なお重要である。のちに太田謹がこれを増訂して明治37(1904)年刊行した。<参考文献>片野青邱『増訂古画備考』解題(同書首巻)
