A type of luminescence. When a substance is excited in some way and continues to emit light for a long time after the excitation is stopped, it is called phosphorescence. While the average lifetime of fluorescence is about 10-9 seconds, phosphorescence can reach several seconds. However, this distinction is not clear-cut, and the two are often defined according to the mechanism of emission. In other words, fluorescence is the light emitted when electrons in a substance are excited to an excited state and then immediately return to their original ground state, while phosphorescence is the light emitted when the electrons move to a metastable intermediate state and then return to the ground state.
