Phosphorescence (English spelling)

Japanese: リン光(燐光) - りんこう（英語表記）phosphorescence

A type of luminescence. When a substance is excited in some way and continues to emit light for a long time after the excitation is stopped, it is called phosphorescence. While the average lifetime of fluorescence is about ^10-9 seconds, phosphorescence can reach several seconds. However, this distinction is not clear-cut, and the two are often defined according to the mechanism of emission. In other words, fluorescence is the light emitted when electrons in a substance are excited to an excited state and then immediately return to their original ground state, while phosphorescence is the light emitted when the electrons move to a metastable intermediate state and then return to the ground state.

ルミネセンスの一種。物質をなんらかの方法で励起し，その励起を中止した後に長時間にわたって発光する場合，これをリン光という。蛍光が10^－9秒程度の平均寿命であるのに対して，リン光は数秒に達することもある。ただし，このような区別は明確なものではなく，発光の機構によって定義することも多い。すなわち，物質内の電子が励起状態へ励起された後，直ちに元の基底状態へもどるときに放出する光が蛍光であり，リン光はいったん準安定な中間状態へ移り，その後に基底状態へもどるときに放出される光である。
