Castile

Japanese: カスティリャ
Castile
A region stretching from central to northern Spain, occupying the center of the old Kingdom of Castile. It was divided into Old Castile in the north, including eight provinces such as Santander and Valladolid, and New Castile in the south, including five provinces such as Madrid and Toledo, but is now divided into the autonomous communities of Cantabria, Rioja, Castile y Leon, and Castile-La Mancha. The area is generally a 600-700m high plateau called the Meseta, with a continental, dry climate. Wheat, barley, and wine are produced, and sheep farming is practiced. In the southwest of Castile-La Mancha is Almaden, a world-famous producer of mercury.
