A drafting tool used to ink straight or curved lines. It has a handle, two blades, and a screw to adjust the distance between them. India ink or sumi ink is placed between the blades to draw lines. To obtain accurate lines, the blades are sharpened to a sharpness that does not cut the paper, so materials that are particularly designed for wear resistance are used to minimize wear during use. The word "crow's mouth" originally referred to the split at the tip of a blade, but when Western-style drafting instruments began to be made in the early Meiji period, the name came to be used because of their similar shape.
