Propertius - Sextus Propertius

An ancient Roman elegiac poet. Born in Assisi. Belonged to the literary salon of Maecenas, the patron of the literary world. The four volumes of the "Elegiac Poems" are centered on difficult, yet delicate and passionate love poems that use a wealth of mythological metaphors to sing of the events of his love affair with a woman called Cynthia. Later, adapting to the spirit of the times, he also took on themes such as Roman legends.

古代ローマのエレゲイア詩人。アッシジの生まれ。文人保護者マエケナスの文学サロンに属す。『エレゲイア詩集』四巻の中心をなすのは、キュンティアとよぶ女性との恋のいきさつを神話の比喩(ひゆ)を豊富に用いて歌う、難解な、しかし繊細で情熱的な恋愛詩。のちには時代精神に順応して、ローマの伝説物語などもテーマにしている。
