Ring (English spelling) Ling, Pehr Henrik
Born: November 15, 1776. Clooneuberg
Died: May 3, 1839, Stockholm. A pioneer of modern physical education in Sweden. In 1799, he went to Denmark, where he studied theology and linguistics at the University of Copenhagen, while receiving instruction in gymnastics from F. Nachtegaard. After returning to Sweden in 1804, he founded Swedish gymnastics, which added unaided gymnastics based on human anatomy and physiology to the gymnastics apparatus of J. Gutsmuts. This formed the core of Ring's gymnastics system, which used ribs, climbing ladders, balance beams, and light equipment such as sticks, clubs, and mute bells. His son, H. Ring, also developed Swedish gymnastics into educational gymnastics. His main works include Reglemente für Gymnastik (1836) and Allgemeine Begrundung der Gymnastik (1840).
