In ionic crystals, when the shortest distance between different ions is R , the electrostatic energy due to interactions between ions added up across all lattice points of the crystal can generally be expressed in the form of the MKSA unit system or the CGS unit system (ε ₀ is the dielectric constant of a vacuum, and - e is the charge of an electron). Here, the coefficient A is a value determined only by the crystal structure, and is called the Madelung constant. In the NaCl (rock salt) crystal structure, A = 1.7476. [Kamimura Ko]
