A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Ophiuroidea, family Ophiuroideidae. A large brown Ophiuroidea found on coral reefs in the waters of Amami, south of the Okinawa Islands, the Western Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean, it hides in the gaps between reef-building corals and rocks, and at high tide it has the habit of stretching out just three arms and stroking the water surface. This arm-waving behavior is for feeding, and it catches floating objects carried by the tide by sticking them to the numerous tentacles growing on the undersides of its arms. Its disk diameter is 2 centimeters, and its arms are over 10 centimeters long. [Michio Shigei] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
