A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Ophiuroidea, family Ophiuroideidae. A large brown Ophiuroidea found on coral reefs in the waters of Amami, south of the Okinawa Islands, the Western Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean, it hides in the gaps between reef-building corals and rocks, and at high tide it has the habit of stretching out just three arms and stroking the water surface. This arm-waving behavior is for feeding, and it catches floating objects carried by the tide by sticking them to the numerous tentacles growing on the undersides of its arms. Its disk diameter is 2 centimeters, and its arms are over 10 centimeters long.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門クモヒトデ綱フサクモヒトデ科に属する海産動物。奄美(あまみ)、沖縄諸島以南、西太平洋、インド洋海域のサンゴ礁に産する褐色の大形クモヒトデで、造礁サンゴや岩礁のすきまに体を潜め、上げ潮のときに腕を3本だけ外へ出して伸ばし、水面をなでるようにして動かす習性がある。この腕振り行動は摂食のためのものであり、潮に乗って流れ寄ってくる浮遊物を腕の裏側に生えた多数の触手に粘着してとらえる。盤径2センチメートル、腕長10センチメートル以上になる。
