A former town in the northeastern part of Oita Prefecture, in the eastern Kunisaki district. Occupying the Aki River basin in the southeastern part of the Kunisaki Peninsula, it is home to rice and shichitoui, and also produces a large amount of mandarin oranges. It is home to Oita Airport and the former residence of Miura Baien (historic site). In March 2006, it merged with the towns of Kunimi, Kunisaki, and Musashi in the eastern Kunisaki district to become a city, Kunisaki City. Area: 90.75 km2 . Population: 9,878 (2003). 大分県北東部,東国東(くにさき)郡の旧町。国東半島南東部の安岐川流域を占め,米作とシチトウイ栽培が行われ,ミカンの生産も多い。大分空港,三浦梅園旧宅(史跡)がある。2006年3月,東国東郡国見町,国東町,武蔵町と合併し市制,国東市となる。90.75km2。9878人(2003)。
