The world's first successful coal mining machine, used in a British coal mine in 1861, was called the Iron Man, and imitated the action of a human swinging a pickaxe horizontally to make a horizontal groove in the bottom of the coal seam (undercutting). Inspired by the success of the Iron Man, by the end of the 19th century, a series of devices had been invented, including the chain cutter (also called the jib cutter or coal cutter), which was used for many years afterwards, the disc cutter, which had blades attached to a circular plate that rotates in a horizontal plane, and the bar cutter, which had many blades attached to a round bar with a horizontal shaft. All of these were used for undercutting the coal seam. In the 20th century, the coal pick was invented, which was used for knocking down the coal seam after undercutting.
