A small city in Tarnobrzeg Voivodeship in southeastern Poland. It is 80 km southeast of Kielce and has a population of 26,800 (1995). It is on the left bank of the upper Vistula River and is a strategic military location, bordering the Świętokrzskie Mountains, the Vistula River, and its tributary, the San River, to the east and west. The town has a long history dating back to the early days of the Kingdom of Poland, but later became the capital of an independent duchy. It obtained city rights in 1286 and has many historical buildings from the 14th to 17th centuries, including a 14th-century Gothic cathedral and gate, and a Renaissance town hall. ポーランド南東部,タルノブジェク県の小都市。キエルツェの南東80kmにあり,人口2万6800(1995)。ビスワ川上流左岸にあり,東西にシフィエントクシュスキエ山地とビスワ川ならびに支流のサン川をひかえる軍事上の要地。町はポーランド王国の初期にさかのぼる古い歴史をもつが,後に独立公国の主都となった。1286年に都市権を獲得し,14世紀のゴシックの大聖堂や城門,ルネサンス期の市庁舎など14~17世紀の歴史的建造物も多数ある。
