Ryomo region

Japanese: 両毛地方 - りょうもうちほう

The name of the region in the northwest of the Kanto region. In a broad sense, it refers to the area that was called Kenu in ancient times, which corresponds to the entire Gunma prefecture and the southern part of Tochigi prefecture today. This region was later divided into Kamitsukeno Province (Kozuke Province after the Nara period) and Shimotsukeno Province (Shimotsuke Province), and the name Ryomo region came to be used. In a narrow sense, it refers vaguely to the long area stretching from southeastern Gunma prefecture to southwestern Tochigi prefecture, covering the area along the JR Ryomo Line and the Tobu Railway lines that connect to it, and this is the common usage today.

関東地方北西部の地域名。広義には古代に毛野（けぬ）と呼ばれた範囲を指し，現在の群馬県全域と栃木県南部にあたる。この地域はのちに上毛野国(奈良時代以降の上野（こうずけ）国)，下毛野国(下野（しもつけ）国)に分かれたことから，両毛地方の名が使われるようになった。狭義には群馬県南東部から栃木県南西部にかけての東西に長い地域を漠然と指し，JR両毛線とこれに連絡する東武鉄道各線の沿線一帯にあたり，現在ではこの使い方が一般的である。
