La Jacquerie (English spelling)

…a peasant uprising that occurred in the Île-de-France region of northern France in 1358. The term Jacques was used by nobles to refer to peasants, and it comes from the fact that medieval peasants wore a short, poor vest called jaques. Around the time of the Battle of Poitiers (1356), the decisive battle in the first half of the Hundred Years' War, in addition to the fighting between French and English knights, large bands of bandits were rampant in the region, committing acts of plunder.
