French photographer. Born in Libourne, Gironde. He left his hometown for Paris as a boy and worked as a sailor and actor, but in the 1890s he began his career selling photographs to painters, writers, and stage designers as reference material. His buyers included painters such as Braque and Utrillo. However, Atget himself had almost no contact with the photography world of the time, and only took photos of Parisian streets for reference material, so he was completely unknown as a photographer. His name finally became known when Man Ray introduced him in a Surrealist journal the year before his death. Today, his mysterious style is popular with a wide range of people.
