Ancient Greek drama flourished in Athens in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. Also known as Attic tragedy, it was one of the greatest artistic achievements produced by the polis community. The heroes from Homer's epics and myths were brought to life for the audience by having them act alongside the chorus (koros), creating a new image of humanity. Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy marked a breakthrough in the technique of dramatic dialogue, Sophocles depicted the anguish over ethical values, and Euripides depicted the tragedy of humans living in a world where such values do not even exist. 前６―前５世紀のアテナイにおいて盛んになった古代ギリシア演劇。〈アッティカ悲劇〉ともいい，ポリス共同体が生んだ最高の芸術的達成の一つ。ホメロスの叙事詩や神話のなかの英雄を，合唱隊（コロス）とともに行動させることで観客に生き生きと蘇らせ，新しい人間像を描いた。アイスキュロスの〈オレステイア三部作〉は劇中対話の技術において画期をなし，ソフォクレスは倫理的価値をめぐる煩悶を描き，エウリピデスはそうした価値さえ存在しない世界に生きる人間の悲劇を描いた。いずれも，以後の西欧演劇，文学に与えた影響は計り知れない。→悲劇／ギリシア演劇
