Ancient Greek drama flourished in Athens in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. Also known as Attic tragedy, it was one of the greatest artistic achievements produced by the polis community. The heroes from Homer's epics and myths were brought to life for the audience by having them act alongside the chorus (koros), creating a new image of humanity. Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy marked a breakthrough in the technique of dramatic dialogue, Sophocles depicted the anguish over ethical values, and Euripides depicted the tragedy of humans living in a world where such values do not even exist. The influence of all of these on subsequent Western drama and literature was immeasurable. → Tragedy/Greek drama → Related topics Dithyrambs | Thespis Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
