...The current name was adopted in 1948, but it began when Kirstein came up with the idea of establishing a permanent ballet company to establish classical ballet in America and invited Balanchine from Paris in 1933. In January of the following year, 1934, the two first opened the School of American Ballet as a base for creating a ballet company, and in the following year, 1935, they established a touring American Ballet company made up of graduates from the school. In the fall of the same year, the company became the resident ballet company of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, but in 1938, due to differences of opinion with Balanchine, who disliked the idea of becoming an international star, the company was terminated from its exclusive contract with the theater. ...
