During the Han Dynasty in China, this was the name of a prefecture centered on Wuwei City in what is now central Gansu Province. During the Qing Dynasty, it became the Liangzhou Prefecture. Located along the Silk Road, it was at the crossroads between the Central Plains Dynasty and the power of nomadic tribes, and during the Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms period, the Former Liang, Later Liang, Southern Liang, Northern Liang, and Western Liang were based here.
