She was the woman whom Petrarch loved throughout his life and about whom he sang in his collection of lyric poems, Canzoniere. According to the poet, he first saw her on Good Friday, April 6, 1327, at the Church of Saint Clare in Avignon, and she ascended to heaven on the same day, April 6, 1348. At the time, Petrarch was understood not as a love poet but as a moral philosopher who pioneered humanism, and even his close friends doubted the genuineness of his love and tried to interpret it as an allegory, following the example of Dante's Beatrice, but the poet insisted that it was true love.
